Baby's Quilt, recycled fabrics, cotton batting, hand stitching, 2022
I made this quilt as a gift to a baby cousin newly born to the world. All of the fabrics used have significance to the parents of this little baby. Some of the fabrics are form clothes that the parents wore as babies, others are from the creativity projects of grandmothers past, including pieces from a dress made by our shared gradnmother and a quilt made by another pair of grandmothers. The woven fabric that serves as the backing of the quilt is recycled from the hospital blanket that was on the bed when the mother of this baby was born. Using fabrics from different times, places, and people of significance in and beyond this baby's life, I hope to create a comforting embodiment of their own nuanced starting point that they can take with them throughout the changes of time.
